What a wonderful Saturday, sandwiched in between a rainy Friday and a torrential Sunday! Debbie's Keyt and Scanlan were the chairmen and did a fantastic job. It would be difficult to give credit to all those who helped in so many ways.

The day started with three balloon launches by Dave Folz, Jim Whitesell, and Sheronda Greenwood. It was a perfect start for the day with less than 1 MPH wind. 110 aircraft came from Houston, Grand Prairie, Oklahoma, Meacham, Marble Falls, and McKinney. Three Pristine Ryan P-22's came in formation and many new birds to us. (A Yak-52 and Grobe motor glider.)

  • Claudia Suiter and crew served over 400 people; brisket, beans, hot dogs and coo-o-o-kies!

  • The spot landing contest came off without a hitch, except for some disagreement about "practice landings. Dave Moore took first and Roger Lessard 2nd place. Ron Schuster got the "creative" award in his J-5 cub by landing on two wheels and holding off one main until he could "plant" it on the line! Tom Woodward also "planted" his Ercoupe. (Ouch!)
  • We "Air-Lifted" 165 people and 48 Young Eagles with Kathleen Bales overseeing the operation assisted by Wendy Moore and Mary Downey. They had help from 10 others in guiding pax's so that they were safe and reassured. A total of 19 pilots participated in aircraft varying from cubs to twin Beeches.
  • Little folks were looked after in a kiddie parking lot by Karen Woodward.

All in all it was a grand day!

Dennis Trusty made his first flight in his new RV-6. It was an uneventful flight with the only squawk the aileron trim needing adjustment. A common occurrence I understand. No oil leaks, everything seemed A-OK. Dennis is a retired Delta captain and spent 10 years building his RV-6. Son Michael, who has an A/P and AI authority, helped him greatly. Incidently Michael stands ready to help you out with annuals, ETC.

In Search of Sunshine (Damon Berry) We had been looking forward to the Kentucky Dam T-18 Fly-In since last year when it was rained out.. (When the
weather cooperates 25-30 airplanes show up and there is a wealth of flying, talking and eating. Even a cocktail or two has been seen in the evenings.)

On Friday morning we were gathered at the Greens, ready to go. Ken Morgan, Askins, Rick Jones and the Berry's. However that friend of the pilot and frequent bearer of bad news, The Weather Channel, reared its ugly head. We could get there, but Saturday would be a washout, and at least half of Sunday too. Nothing ruins a trip for me quicker than the prospect of dragging along under low ceilings worrying about showers and towers (rhymes don't it?). Don't even talk to me about getting on top and counting on the luck of the Irish to provide a hole at the other end. Call me Girly Boy.

We decided that another destination was the right call. Go West young man. Ken decided to stay home and Rick (Girly Boy) Jones wanted to stay home and play with his granddaughter. Could be the reality of being gone about 10 of the last 12 days affected his decision. Nah! Girly Boy! The rest of us said Big Bend Country.

LAJITAS: At the West end of Big Bend National Park is Lajitas, Texas. Located right on the Rio Grande it was a tiny agricultural community, which later became a Cavalry and trading outpost. About 25 years ago a wealthy guy decided it would make a great resort location and pumped a bunch of $ in. A couple of years ago he ran out of interest and time and sold it to a .com guy who bought the whole town (yes, the town) and pumped a BUNCH of $ in. The present airport is right in the center of the resort and a new golf course is almost finished. It looks like an old west town and all the visitor treats are available. Jeep tours (we did that, don't look over the side on the drive up says Maxine), raft trips, horses are all available. The Rio Grande is out the back door and for $1 the Volga Boatman (Julio)
will row you across to Old Mexico where the great food is.

The real highlight in town is having a drink with the Mayor, Clay Henry. He liked everyone but Damon whose fingers he tried to break. It was a bittersweet meeting for Gary because although he bonds with anyone who loves beer the way Clay does, Gary HATED the idea of pouring bottle after bottle down the throat of a goat. Yup, the Mayor's a goat. If the two of them didn't look so much alike Gary probably wouldn't have been so generous.

The trip and scenery were wonderful. The weather unbeatable. Topped off with a stop at the CAF museum in Midland on the way back made it one of my favorite trips.


NOTAMS:

1. We are so sorry to lose J'nene Morgan. She was one grand, fun loving lady. Keep Ken in your prayers.
2. Next month, December, I will send a paper copy of the newsletter to everyone. I will include a return envelope for returning dues to our new Treasurer, Karen Jensen and the obligatory annual questionnaire. Please fill it out!. It will be the basis for our EAA 983 membership Directory. Dues will remain the same as last year ~ $15.
3. Dick is getting the Polen ready for Dr. Stearmann of Univ. of TX to conduct vibration node testing. Maybe we can get a video of the process to show at one of our meetings. It should be interesting.
4. The 99s hosted the breakfast at Granbury Municipal on October 27. These affairs are getting to be quite well attended and they had 100 people and 36 aircraft. John Holt and staff at Granbury are helpful and the facilities are excellent.
5. Dave Moore gave a talk on the Comanche Peak Nuclear plant at the Pecan breakfast club on 21 November. Dave is the well qualified plant manager. He described the security measures they have in place and focused on the need we Americans have for nuclear energy. There is no reason why we need fear a terrorist strike on Comanche Peak, either from the air or ground. The recent restriction (now lifted) on flying within 10 miles of a nuclear facility was totally unwarranted.

Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and problems, known as"squawks," submitted by QUANTAS pilots and the solution recorded by maintenance engineers. By the way Quantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident.

(Anyone who has been involved with military maintenance can relate to these examples)

P = The problem logged by the pilot.
S = The solution and action taken by the engineers

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.
P: Test flight OK, except autoland very rough. S: Autoland not installed on this aircraft.
P: No. 2 propeller seeping prop fluid. S: No. 2 propeller seepage normal. Nos. 1, 3 and 4 propellers lack normal seepage.
P: Something loose in cockpit S: Something tightened in cockpit.
P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on backorder.
P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 20~fpm descent. S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed.
P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level.
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S: That's what they're there for!
P: IFF inoperative. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.
P: Suspected crack in windscreen. S: Suspect you're right.
P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.
P: Aircraft handles funny. S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.
P: Target radar hums. S: Reprogrammed target radar with words.
P: Mouse in cockpit. S: Cat installed.

December 8 th falls on Saturday night this year, So that gives you all day to get ready for our big year-end bash. Attire is dressy to formal. The cash bar will be open at 6:00 P.M. Buffet will serve from 6:00 to 7:30 with entertainment to follow. Our feature entertainment this year will be the band "Flipside", so dust off those dancing shoes for this great evening.
